April Absurdity: Day 3 Results

#13 New Mexico State at #4 Virginia Tech:
Virginia Tech, 26-8

Virginia Tech rode the emotion of the shootings on campus recently to a 26-8 first round victory over New Mexico State. The Hokies came out slow, with three field goals to show for three trips into the redzone in the majority of the first half, but a 52 yard interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Brian McPherson jump-started Va Tech. Sean Glennon passed for a 5 yard touchdown in the third, and although NMSU would score on a 3 yard touchdown pass by Holbrook (and subsequent 2 point conversion pass by Holbrook), it wasn't enough at 4th seeded Virginia Tech came out winners over 13th seeded New Mexico State, 26-8.

New Mexico State:
Chase Holbrook: 15-36-241, TD, 2 INT
A.J. Harris, WR: 5-99, TD
Michael Connor, MLB: 3 TKL, INT, FF

Virginia Tech:
Sean Glennon: 13-22-197, TD, 2 INT
David Clowney, WR: 6-100
Brian McPherson, CB: TKL, TFL, SK, INT, TD

#16 Montana State at #1 Ohio State:
Ohio State, 35-14

The Buckeyes scored on a 31 yard pass from Troy Smith to Ted Ginn Jr. two and a half minutes into the game, at which point Smith was injured and taken out for 8 weeks. Heh. Not that it effects anything. Montana State actually tied the game up on a 20 yard TD pass of their own a minute and a bit later, but Justin Zwick came in and passed for 3 touchdowns and along with a 40 yard fumble return touchdown by defensive end Lawrence Wilson, #1 seeded Ohio State easily accounted for 16th seeded Montana State, 35-14.

Montana State:
QB #14: 17-32-237, 2 TD, INT
WR #1: 4-82, 2 TD
SS #25: 5 TKL, FF

Ohio State:
Justin Zwick: 14-20-177, 3 TD
Marcel Frost, TE: 6-97, 2 TD
Lawrence Wilson, DE: 2 TKL, 2 TFL, SK, FR, TD

#9 New Mexico at #8 Troy:
New Mexico, 24-6

In as little of an upset that you're going to get, 9th seeded (and higher rated than their opponents) New Mexico defeated 8th seeded Troy, 24-6. New Mexico scored 24 unanswered points to start off the game, including an 18 yard fumble return touchdown by MLB Justin Clayton with 3 seconds left in the third. Troy passed for a 4 yard touchdown with 1:23 left in the ball game, but they failed their 2 point conversion attempt and a drive in the final 20 seconds was pointless as 9th seeded New Mexico defeated 8th seeded Troy, 24-6.

New Mexico:
Kole McKamey: 10-15-149, TD
Martelius Epps, HB: 11-63, TD
Justin Clayton, MLB: 8 TKL, 2 TFL, SK, FR, TD

Troy:
Carl Meadows: 13-24-146, TD
Josh Pruitt, TE: 5-27, TD
Marcus Richardson, OLB: 5 TKL, TFL

#12 Mississippi at #5 Navy:
Navy, 24-14

In the snow at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial, 5th seeded Navy was too good for 12th seeded Mississippi, 24-14. Ole Miss scored on the first play from scrimmage, on an 82 yard pass from Schaeffer to Suggs, but it was all Navy from that point as impact fullback Adam Ballard ran for a 44 yard touchdown, Thrasher returned a kick for a touchdown and the Midshipmen even passed for a 62 yard touchdown as 5th seeded Navy defeated 12th seeded Mississippi, 24-14.

Mississippi:
Brent Schaeffer: 17-30-213, 2 TD, INT
Burnell Wallace, WR: 6-56, TD
Patrick Willis, OLB: 5 TKL, 2 TFL

Navy:
Brian Hampton: 5-8-126, TD
Adam Ballard, FB: 10-85, TD
Rob Caldwell, MLB: 4 TKL, 2 TFL, 2 SK
